Two emblems found on the internet, 2022
Grayson Graham collection · March 9, 2022
In the story: 8. Carrying it forward, since 2022.
Two pictures of the emblem found on the internet in March 2022 and saved together. Kept as a reference, not as evidence of where a drawing came from.
Grayson Graham saved these two images while asking a local sign shop to reproduce the emblem on a motorcycle. They are not documents of a maker or a date: they are what the emblem looked like on somebody’s screen in March 2022, and where a picture was found says nothing about where the drawing came from.
Measured, the two are not even one drawing. They score 0.407 against each other. The gold one is the museum drawing — 0.959 against the roundel Downtown Bend uses and 0.954 against the museum’s own February 2012 file, which is the same-artwork neighbourhood rather than a resemblance. The black one joins nothing: against the master this site gives away it is 0.285, the second weakest of seventeen.
This record was filed as a specimen until 14 September 2026, and the gold file sat in the published group of drawings that measure as one artwork. It was demoted on the reasoning that a comparison group is a claim about the collection, and an image found on the internet is a claim about a search. The files, their hashes and their page stay exactly where they were.
Measured
Read at high confidence from 309 px of letter, which is the letters alone, at this drawing's own letter cut.
Each drawing is reduced to the same thing — the letters BEND, cropped to their own ink, rasterised at a common size — so two of them can be compared by shape alone.
- Device aspect
- 1.000 The roundel’s width divided by its height. 1.000 is a true circle; anything else is an oval, or a photograph taken at an angle. 0.977 – 1.048 across the collection
- Word aspect
- 1.011 The same ratio for the block of BEND letters alone, once cropped to their own ink. 0.927 – 1.862; the high end is lettering set wide rather than stacked
- Figure ink
- 0.473 How much of the drawing is ink rather than ground. A heavy ring and fat letters push it up. 0.169 – 0.728, median 0.493
- Coverage
- 0.418 How much of the normalised square the letters fill once every drawing is reduced to the same size. 0.198 – 0.576, median 0.456
What it most resembles. Two digitisations of a single printing score 0.975, so that is what “the same artwork” looks like as a number.
- BendEmblem.com 1912 adaptation 0.473 — different drawings
- Bend Chamber of Commerce, June 1953 0.473 — different drawings
- Bulletin business directory, September 1943 0.466 — different drawings
Least like it: Bulletin business directory, August 1949, at 0.145.
Resemblance is not descent. A high score means two drawings have the same shape. It does not establish which came first, or that either was copied from the other.
