Five varieties, artistically arranged

The show came back after three years, and the cup found a new holder.

Floral displays and potted plants filled the tables along the walls and down the centre of the new Downing building — which this page calls Wall street, and which was on Bond. The show — the first since the summer of 1917 — opened in the afternoon under the auspices of the Women's Civic Improvement League, with the morning given to receiving and arranging exhibits. Crowds filled the room all afternoon and a greater attendance was expected in the evening; the doors would close at half past nine.

The report names the winner and states the rule in the same breath, which is why this page is where the cup’s terms in the club’s own period are settled rather than inferred.

That is the cup's working rule in the club's own period, and it held: the same terms — not less than five varieties, judged on artistic arrangement — were still being printed in 1922. Mrs. C. S. Hudson, who had held the cup since 1917, took it back the following year.

Flowers and plants offered for sale drew much attention, many of them donated, the proceeds going to a fund.

One correction the page itself invites. It prints the show's address as Wall street. Page two of the same issue puts the display “in the new Downing building on Bond street”, and so do the announcement of August 14, the rules of August 19, and the weekly's reprint of the editorial. On September 7 the Bulletin reported W. P. Downing leasing a storeroom in “his new two story concrete business block on Bond street”. Four notices and the owner's own building put it on Bond; this front page is alone in saying Wall.

From the source

In competition for the chief awards, the display entered by Mrs. C. W. Hayes won the Emblem club cup, while second place was conceded to Mrs. H. K. Brooks. Competitors for the cup were required to submit at least five varieties of flowers, to be judged according to artistic arrangement.
