One sentence dates a winner and proves a two-year silence at the same time.
When Bend revived its flower show in 1920, the paper listed what was at stake — and in naming who held the two cups, dated a result the archive did not have.
That does two jobs. It names the 1917 winner of the Emblem Club cup, a year the archive had no result for. And it establishes contemporaneously that no show was held in 1918 or 1919 — the cups had simply stayed on their winners' shelves through the war and the influenza year.
A retrospective of 1939 says the same thing from nineteen years away, listing 1918, 1919 and 1934 as the show's only missed years. It is rare for this archive to have both the memory and the contemporary record agreeing, and rarer still for the contemporary one to be found second.
Mrs. C. S. Hudson would win the cup again in 1921 and 1922. Her husband had gone to Portland with the Emblem Club in 1913 and undertook a quarter of its debt in 1919.

Two important prizes to be offered are the Emblem club cup, now held by Mrs. C. S. Hudson, and the Commercial club cup, now held by Mrs. C. A. Smith. These were awarded at the last flower show, held in the summer of 1917.
