A hummer and a comer

The Bend Bulletin · November 10, 1962

In the story: 6. The emblem outlives the club, 1930–2010.

A newspaper column recalling that the Emblem Club of Bend was guest of honour at a Seattle Ad Club dinner in November 1912 and quoting the Seattle Times editorial about it.

What Seattle thought of the Emblem Club in its first year, reaching this archive fifty years late.

Almost everything this archive holds about the Emblem Club was written in Bend, by a paper that knew its members personally. This is a metropolitan daily in another state, six hundred miles away, describing the club after watching it work — and the verdict is that it knew its business and that its publicity methods were a revelation. For an organisation founded to make Bend known outside Bend, that is the nearest thing to a performance review the record contains.

The scale is worth holding too. Two hundred and sixty-five Seattle residents at dinner, in the club's first year, with the mayors of both cities speaking. The archive already had the other half of that exchange — the Emblem Club hosting the Seattle Ad Club at a Hallowe'en luncheon in Bend, and issuing Seattle Contrasts in Seattle in February 1913, twenty-four pages of pictures and no text, dedicated to the Seattle Ad Club. This is the Seattle end of the same relationship, and it explains the dedication.

It reaches us badly, which the record has to say plainly. This is a 1962 retrospective column quoting a 1912 editorial in a paper this project has not read. Two removes, fifty years, and no original in hand.

From the source

Early in November, 1912, Bend was singularly honored and advertised at a meeting of the Ad Club in Seattle, Wash. Members of the Emblem Club of Bend were guests at a dinner in Seattle, with 265 Seattle residents attending. Following the meeting, the Seattle Times had this to say editorially:

Bend, Oregon is a new town, but it has a boosters' club that knows its business. Tuesday's session of the Seattle Ad Club, at which the Emblem Club of Bend was guest of honor, was a revelation in advanced methods of publicity. Bend is a ‘hummer' and a ‘comer'.

Mayor George Cotterill of Seattle and Mayor G. P. Putnam of Bend were the featured speakers at the Seattle dinner.
