Still given, though the club no longer exists

The Bend Bulletin · August 20, 1941

In the story: 6. The emblem outlives the club, 1930–2010.

A newspaper paragraph saying that among the trophies to be awarded is the Emblem club cup, first awarded in 1912 and still given though the Emblem club no longer exists.

For years the project could only infer that the cup had outlived the club. In 1941 the paper simply said so.

Among the trophies to be awarded at the 1941 Bend flower show, the Bulletin listed the Emblem Club's, and said in passing what this project had spent a year inferring.

That single sentence does two things. It confirms 1912 as the cup's first year, independently of the 1912 reports themselves. And it states the mechanism plainly: twenty-nine years after the club offered a silver cup at Bend's flower show, and seventeen years after the club voted to disband, a committee was still deciding each August what the cup should be for. The name went on circulating because a trophy did.

The same paragraph notes that the Garden club was offering a cup for the best modernistic arrangement “for the first time” that year — a caution against assuming any category stayed attached to any one trophy. The notice does not say what the Emblem cup was for in 1941, and “no longer exists” is the newspaper's 1941 characterisation, not a record of dissolution.
