Thirty-five years after the club first offered it, and twenty-three after the club ended, the cup was still being won.

The Emblem Club offered a silver cup at Bend’s flower show in 1912, to be kept by whoever won it three seasons running. Thirty-five years later it was still being awarded, and the last winner this archive has a record of is Mrs. C. K. Weil.

Each year the category changed: the best all-round display in 1912, a luncheon table arrangement in 1933, a miniature on a mirror in 1938, a modernistic arrangement in 1943, the most artistic in 1947. A committee kept finding a use for it long after there was any club to consult.

Two spellings in the passage are the paper’s own and are kept: the line ends “bronz” at the column rule with no hyphen and no final e, and “crysanthemums” is set without its h.
