The only year on record when the Emblem Club's cup went to vegetables.
Mrs. C. H. Bishop and Byrl Shellhart, Jr., each won two of the six major trophies at the annual Bend flower and garden show, held at the Episcopal parish hall. Shellhart’s white gladioli took the Bend Garden club cup for being first in the peace display and went on to win the Elks’ cup, the sweepstake prize for the entire show.
Then the paper came to Mrs. Bishop, and to the one year in thirty-five when the Emblem Club cup left flowers altogether.
It is the second wartime summer. A “peace display” and a victory arrangement are among the classes, and the Emblem trophy has been handed to whoever grew the most vegetables. A committee found a use for the cup that matched the year.
Mrs. S. W. Thompson took the Theodora S. Johnson trophy for the greatest number of points on flowers, and an arrangement of red, white and blue gladioli signifying victory won the Lions’ club trophy for Mrs. L. C. Byars. Division winners were listed on page 3.
