      "That single sentence does two things. It confirms 1912 as the cup's first year, independently of the 1912 reports themselves. And it states the mechanism plainly: twenty-nine years after the club offered a silver cup at Bend's flower show, and seventeen years after the club voted to disband, a committee was still deciding each August what the cup should be for. The name went on circulating because a trophy did.",
