Seize the Day
Tim Davis, Places for Everyone · Photographed 2017
In the story: 7. They got there, 2011–2021.
A Bend emblem becomes the sun above mountains and water in Roadman’s mixed-media artwork.
Tim Davis photographed the work for his account of Tin Pan Alley. It hangs on the O’Kane Building in Gasoline Alley, on the side of the Summit Saloon — the same building whose transoms have carried the emblem in leaded glass since 1916, though nothing on record says the placement was meant that way.
In a 2014 interview the artist said the emblem within the sun is in honour of William Cheney, “who designed it in the early 1900s”. Her explanation records her intention and her belief; it does not establish who first drew the historic emblem, and this archive still has nothing that does.
Measured
Standing alone. This drawing is in none of the families: it is not evidence of one, and the record above says on what grounds it is out.
Read at medium confidence from 260 px of letter.
Not measured. Painted lettering inside a carved sun; the letters cannot be separated from the surrounding decoration. Excluding a drawing is itself a finding, so it is recorded rather than estimated.
