Thirty years ago, sixteen names

The Bend Bulletin · May 29, 1943

In the story: 6. The emblem outlives the club, 1930–2010.

A newspaper retrospective column headed “Thirty Years Ago”, reprinting an item about the Emblem club leaving for Portland and naming the men who went.

The column that led to the club's fullest membership list.

Between a note on the Bend Brick & Lumber company and one on Sam Blakley, the column reprints the Emblem Club’s trip to Portland and lists every man who made it.

That list is why this page matters. The club left no roll; sixteen names on one morning is the closest thing to one, and finding them here sent the search to the original of May 28, 1913, which prints the same sixteen under a front-page headline.

Having both is what made the column measurable. The 1913 page says the party “were the guests of the Portland Ad Club today at a luncheon at the Portland Hotel”; this column says they “will be guests”. Same facts, rewritten tense, and the railroad car, the luncheon and the three hundred guests all dropped.
