Most names in this archive appear once. Harper Skuse appears at every stage, and in 1918 the paper wrote him a send-off that doubles as a biography.
The Emblem Club left no membership roll. What it left is a scatter of names across twenty years of newsprint, and only one man can be followed the whole way through.
Harper W. Skuse arrived in Bend in the autumn of 1912 — the year of the emblem — and opened a hardware store. He was one of the sixteen who went to Portland with the club in 1913. He was one of five who organised the dance in December 1917 that brought the lapsed club back together, and he was its secretary on the slate elected six weeks later. He drilled with the Bend Rifles, who met in the Emblem Club's own room every Wednesday at a quarter to eight.
In October 1918 he sold up and left for the army, a first lieutenant of Co. A of the Bend militia trained at the University of Oregon officers' camp. The paper gave him a send-off that doubles as a biography, and it is below.
When the club reorganized again the following April, it elected somebody else secretary.
