Five men and a dance

The Bend Bulletin · December 29, 1917

In the story: 4. Emblematic measles, 1917–1922.

A short newspaper item headed “Emblem Club Dance”, saying an informal dance will be held to bring members together to reorganize the club, and naming the five men in charge.

The clubhouse had closed. Getting it open again started with an informal dance, and the paper named who arranged it.

Four sentences in a Saturday paper. The club rooms had closed, and the way back into them began with an informal dance — arranged, the notice says, by T. A. McCann, Clyde McKay, Carl Johnson, R. B. Gould and Harper Skuse.

Six weeks later the club elected officers, and four of those five men were on the slate — Johnson first vice-president, McKay second, Gould treasurer, Skuse secretary. McCann would be the trustee who bought the building back in 1919. This is not a social note. It is the organising committee of the next Emblem Club, meeting in the room it was trying to reopen.

It settles a small thing too. The officer lists give only H. W. Skuse. This notice gives him a first name: Harper. He had been on the club's trip to Portland in 1913, so he spans its whole first decade.
