The disbanding, reprinted fifteen years later

The Bend Bulletin · May 13, 1939

In the story: 6. The emblem outlives the club, 1930–2010.

A newspaper column headed Bend’s Yesterdays, Fifteen Years Ago, reprinting a May 1924 report that the Emblem club will be disbanded.

The paper reprinted its own past each day. Fifteen years on, that is how the club’s end survives.

Historic Oregon Newspapers holds no 1924 Bend Bulletin at all, which is why the club’s disbanding has been so hard to see. But the paper ran a daily column reprinting items from exactly fifteen years earlier, and in May 1939 that reached May 1924. The heading is set apart with the item, because the heading is what dates it.

The project had already recovered this day’s report from a different archive. Finding it again by another route is the rarest thing here: independent corroboration of a recovered text.

One phrase in it is plainly wrong. "Founded in 1913" cannot be right, because the same newspaper had printed notices of the Emblem Club in July 1912. The closest retrospective we have, written eleven years after the fact by the paper that published the original evidence, already had the date muddled. It is a useful warning about every later recollection.
