A new lodge needs a hall, and everyone in Bend looks at the same building.
This archive's account of the building has run: A. M. Drake builds it, Cheney buys it and adds Emblem hall, the title sits with D. E. Hunter of The Bend Company, the reorganised club buys it back in 1919, and the Masons buy it in 1924. This page puts a fourth party in the queue seven years before the sale, and names the condition — a low enough figure from the present owner.
The present owner in April 1917 was not the Emblem Club. The paper says the building is occupied by the club and owned by someone else, which is exactly the position the 1919 purchase would resolve when the reorganised club bought its own grounds from Hunter for $5,300. The club was a tenant in its own hall in 1917 and the town knew it.
The Elks did not buy it. They were instituted in it instead — at the Emblem club, on the evening of June 27, 1919, seven weeks after the club had finally bought the place.
From the source
That the establishment of an Elks lodge in Bend is actually assured, was the statement made this morning by Vernon A. Forbes… At the present time, more than 100 Elks and others who signed the charter petition are in Bend and the vicinity, while applicants for membership in addition, total nearly 200.
No actual arrangements have been as yet made for a lodge hall or club rooms, but it is understood from various sources that the purchase of the building now occupied by the Emblem club may be the solution of the problem in case a low enough figure is granted by the present owner.
