H. E. Allen took the chair for 1922, and the four directors the record had never named are named here.
Seven men, elected one night and organised the next day. The record used to say “the slate also named four directors” without naming them; they are Crosby Shevlin, C. W. Hayes, Dr. E. E. Gray and Tracy Fairchild.
Two of the seven are elsewhere in this archive. J. C. Rhodes, the vice president, is one of the sixteen who went to Portland in 1913 and the man whose 1969 letter is the last thing anybody who was in the room that January wrote about the club. H. E. Allen, the president, is the Allen whose house nomination sixty-odd years later cited the two 1924 reports that told this project how the club ended — and who was still being elected to the board in May 1924, at the meeting that voted to disband.
A third name places the club in the town’s economy without any comment being needed. Crosby Shevlin carries the name of the mill that by then was stamping the town’s emblem on its pine, though the paper does not say whether he was of that family. And Mrs. C. W. Hayes had won the Emblem Club cup at the flower show a year and a half earlier.
The structure is worth noting against the 1913 book, which describes a single officer called the Taboo. By 1922 the club has a president, a vice president, a secretary-treasurer and a board. When it changed is now bounded at one end: in February 1918 the club was already holding a regular monthly meeting and electing a president, two vice presidents, a treasurer and a secretary. Why it changed is still undocumented.
