Twenty-five years ago, a dancing party

A newspaper retrospective column headed “Twenty five years ago”, recalling a dancing party at the Emblem club honouring Lt. B. A. Stover.

The column that found the Valentine party — and added something to it.

The column for February 14, 1944 looks back twenty-five years, between a petition against the draining of Malheur lake and a drive for Armenian relief.

The original of February 14, 1919 survives. It says the hostesses “were the hostesses last night”, describes Valentine decorations and a shooting gallery with hearts as targets — and says only “in honor of Lieutenant B. A. Stover”, under a headline calling him a soldier.

“Recently returned from the war” is the column’s addition. It may well be true. It is not in the source, and there is no way to trace where it came from. That is the sharpest reason to distrust these columns for anything the original does not also say — which, for the years the archive does not hold, is everything.
