The emblem on a baseball jersey
Deschutes Historical Museum · Undated
This record carries no date and is not plotted along the story. The archive holds it.
Eight players and a batboy, a grandstand behind them, and the mark on every chest.
The museum's 2013 video holds one photograph the archive did not expect: a baseball team, in full uniform, each jersey carrying the circular BEND emblem on the left chest. The caps carry a plain B instead. Behind them is a wooden grandstand with people in it.
This is the emblem doing something different from everything else in this archive. A member wore it on a lapel because he had signed an oath; a company printed it on an advertisement because it owned it; a town cast it in aluminium for windshields because the club had given it away. A team wearing it on a uniform is a town using it as its name.
It is undated, and it is the least legible of the four objects in the film: about thirty-five pixels of letter, which reads as a disc filled edge to edge and nothing finer. No character is scored and the drawing is not a filed specimen.
