    "summary": "The Bend Chamber of Commerce’s 1953 full-page advertisement is headed by the emblem — a dated drawing by the same body whose 2001 roundel was long the modern edge of the project’s largest gap.",
    "findings": [
      "The Bend Chamber of Commerce's full-page advertisement of June 16, 1953 is headed by a circular BEND device: a solid disc with the word reversed out in condensed, interlocking capitals filling it edge to edge.",
      "Measured on the native-resolution scan the device is 312 by 325 pixels at about 304 dpi — roughly an inch across, nearly three times the size of the 1917 printing.",
      "It sits inside what was the archive’s largest gap. That gap is now mostly filled around it: the emblem appears on a Shevlin Pine advertisement in June 1917 (bb-1917-06-28-2), two and a half inches across on the 1925 county fair edition (bb-1925-09-19-32), and at the head of the Bulletin’s own business directory from February 1939 to January 1951 (bb-1939-02-01-6). What is unevidenced is June 1917 to September 1925, and January 1951 to August 2001.",
      "The advertiser is the Bend Chamber of Commerce — the same body whose Visitor and Convention Bureau roundel, captured in August 2001, had been the gap's modern edge.",
      "The device appears once across all 66 pages of the Golden Jubilee edition, which were pulled as images and read on contact sheets after the edition's OCR had been cleared as false positives.",
      "The page gives Bend's 1950 population as 11,409, with a city zone population of 13,500.",
      "Its third letter is mirrored. The Bulletin’s directory masthead reads the ordinary way on Wednesday 15 February 1950 and mirrored on Saturday the 18th, and every drawing in this archive before that week runs the diagonal the ordinary way, so this page was printed from the replacement block rather than from the 1912 cut it resembles at a glance."
    ],
    "limitations": [
      "The advertisement does not name the device, credit a designer, claim any right in it, or mention the Emblem Club. It is a drawing on a page, dated and attributed to an advertiser, and nothing more.",
      "Three dated points are not a chain. This record documents no continuity with 1917 or with 2001; what continuity there is between 1939 and 1951 belongs to the newspaper’s directory and is recorded there, not here.",
      "The 1953 device is printed as white letters reversed out of a solid disc; the 1917 device is black letters inside a ruled circle. The construction is the same and the treatment is not, and no conclusion is drawn from either about a single master drawing.",
      "Newsprint is a poor witness to fine drawing. The native region filed here is about 304 dpi, which carries the construction clearly and the stroke detail imperfectly. No proportional measurement should be taken from it.",
      "\"Appears once in 66 pages\" is a count made by eye on contact sheets at reduced size. A device smaller than the reduction can hide, so it is a floor rather than a proof of uniqueness.",
      "This record said until 14 September 2026 that the 1953 device was “the only dated drawing of the emblem between 1917 and 2001”. It was not. A sweep of outsized issues found the emblem on a 1925 fair edition, on a 1917 lumber advertisement, and heading a Bulletin directory from 1939 to 1951. The sentence was true of what had been looked at, which is not the same thing, and the difference is the whole reason this archive prefers \"not found\" to \"not there\".",
      "This record sat with the 1912 cut until 14 September 2026, when the mirrored N was noticed by eye. The shape measurement had not caught it and could not: a reversed diagonal moves few pixels, and the whole-device score it was being judged on is dominated by the ring."

What remains is the sweep’s unopened middle — about 170 outsized issues between 1917 and 1952 are still unswept, and the directory’s own run is sampled at nine dates out of roughly 1,700 — and, for this edge specifically, anything that puts a drawing in the Chamber’s hands rather than the newspaper’s.",

      "A full page in the Bend Bulletin's Golden Jubilee edition, bought by the Bend Chamber of Commerce: a 1953 aerial view of the town, “THE FRIENDLY CITY” set at the right, eight headed paragraphs on Location, Highways, Climate, Living Conditions, Manufacturing, Transportation, Churches and Civic Clubs and Industrial Sites, an invitation to the Bend Water Pageant of July 3 and 4, and at the foot “FOR FURTHER INFORMATION WRITE OR WIRE — CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, BEND, OREGON”.",
      "And in the top left corner, an inch across, the emblem. A solid disc with the word BEND reversed out of it in white — condensed, interlocking capitals, the letters conjoined and compressed so they fill the circle edge to edge, the outer strokes of the B and the D running into the ring.",
      "The Chamber signs the page at the foot of it, in a ruled box beside an invitation to the Bend Water Pageant of 3 and 4 July. The strapline in that box — “IN SCENIC CENTRAL OREGON” — is the same phrase the Bulletin ran across the fair edition of 1925, under a picture band with the emblem in the middle of it. Twenty-eight years apart, the town is using one line and one device together; that is a habit rather than a link, and it is worth noticing without being turned into one.",
      "This archive has described the years between the emblem’s last dated drawing and its next as its largest gap. That gap ran from March 1917, after a butter advertisement printed the device twice, to August 2001, when a Chamber of Commerce roundel was captured on a website — eighty-four years and five months with no dated drawing at all. This page was the first drawing found inside it, and it is no longer alone. A sweep of the Bulletin’s outsized issues has since put the emblem on a lumber advertisement in June 1917, two and a half inches wide on the 1925 county fair edition, and at the head of the paper’s own business directory from 1939 to 1951. What is left unevidenced is June 1917 to September 1925, and January 1951 to August 2001.",
      "The body that printed it is the point. The 2001 file that had been the gap's modern edge is the Bend Chamber of Commerce's Visitor and Convention Bureau logo. This is the Bend Chamber of Commerce, forty-eight years earlier, using a device of the same construction on its own full-page advertisement. Whatever the 2001 roundel was, it was not a modern invention arriving out of nowhere: the Chamber had been printing a circular BEND letter device since at least 1953, and the town’s own newspaper had been printing one since 1925.",
      "It was found by looking. The Golden Jubilee edition's OCR had already been read in full and returned only false positives, because OCR finds the word and can never find the drawing. Sixty-six pages were pulled as images and tiled into six contact sheets, and the device is on one of them. Across the whole edition — nine sections, sixty-six pages, hundreds of advertisements by Bend businesses in the town's fiftieth-anniversary issue — it appears exactly once.",
      "One more thing sits on the page without comment. The Chamber gives Bend's 1950 population as 11,409, with a city zone of 13,500. The Emblem Club's members swore in 1913 to keep at it until Bend had a hundred thousand. In 1953 they were a ninth of the way there, and the town passed the figure in 2021."
