  "notes": "The complete numbered rules for the 1927 Bend flower show. Rule 4 offers the general display for \"the Emblem club and the chamber of commerce cups\"; rule 12 gives the Emblem club cup for the most artistic arrangement of not less than five varieties. The two descriptions are the same pair the paper printed in 1920, and they survive a rule set that was otherwise revised in many particulars, three years after the club voted to disband.",

    "findings": [
      "Rule 4 offers the general display of flowers as the class \"for which the Emblem club and the chamber of commerce cups are offered\".",
      "Rule 12 awards the Emblem club cup for \"the most artistic arrangement of not less than five varieties of flowers\" and the chamber of commerce cup on 50 per cent greatest variety and 50 per cent perfection of bloom.",
      "These are the same two descriptions of the Emblem Club cup the Bulletin printed in its 1920 rules.",
      "The surrounding rules were revised between 1920 and 1927: vegetables dropped from the show, the Woman's Civic League replaced the Library Club as seller, prizes moved from after the show to the afternoon of it, exhibitors were newly required to have grown what they entered, and the one-prize rule changed from per exhibit to per person.",
      "Rule 12 adds a provision absent in 1920: entrants for the Emblem club cup may furnish their own receptacles.",
      "This is three years after the club's stockholders voted in May 1924 to disband and sell the Drake property.",
      "Both percentage figures were confirmed against the page's native-resolution scan; the provider's OCR renders the first as \"BO\"."
    ],
    "limitations": [
      "The rules are the flower show committee's, printed by the newspaper. Nothing on this page says the Emblem Club had any part in setting them in 1927, and the club is named only as the cup's donor.",
      "Rule 12 is cut off at the foot of the column, mid-phrase, after \"their own receptacles and table\". The continuation is not on this page and is not supplied here.",
      "That the two cup descriptions descend from the 1920 rules is an inference from the texts matching, not a documented copy. No premium list for 1921 to 1926 has been read in full, so the path between them is not traced.",
      "The comparison is between this page and the published rules of August 19, 1920. Rules published in the intervening years could have moved and moved back, and the archive has not read them.",
      "The contradiction between rules 4 and 12 is on the page; which one the judges applied in 1927 is settled only by the award report two days later, filed separately."

    "intro": "Twelve numbered rules, printed in 1927. Much of the show had changed since 1920. The Emblem Club cup's two contradictory descriptions had not.",
    "body": [
      "Twelve numbered rules, and the last two are set apart below because they only mean what they mean together: rule eleven is how flowers are judged at this show — colour, form, size, length of stem — and rule twelve is the exception made for two trophies, which are judged on something else entirely and get tables of their own. The sentence runs past the foot of the column.",
      "Rule four, earlier in the same list, puts the archive back on ground it has walked: “No flower not included in the published list will be eligible for prize, except as a part of the general display of flowers for which the Emblem club cup is offered.” So the general display in one rule and the most artistic arrangement in another, for the same trophy — exactly the pair the Bulletin printed in August 1920.",
      "The general display in one rule, the most artistic arrangement in another, for the same trophy. That is exactly the pair the Bulletin printed in August 1920, and it is what makes this page worth keeping, because almost everything around it moved. Vegetables are gone: 1920 ran a flower and vegetable show, 1927 a flower show. The Library Club sold the entries in 1920; the Woman's Civic League sells them in 1927. In 1920 “no prizes will be given out at the Flower show” and orders went out the morning after; in 1927 “prizes will be given out in the afternoon of the show.” Exhibitors must now grow what they enter, a requirement 1920 did not make. Rule five changed from one exhibit not winning two prizes to one person not entering two exhibits for one prize.",
      "So this is not a premium list reprinted out of laziness. Somebody went through it. They rewrote the selling arrangements, the prize distribution, the eligibility of the grower and the scope of the show, and left the one sentence that had never agreed with itself exactly where it was.",
      "The dates give that its weight. The Emblem Club's stockholders voted to disband in May 1924, after a year of inactivity, and elected directors to sell the Drake property. By August 1927 the club had been gone three years and its building was in other hands. Its cup went on being offered on its terms, in its wording, because the terms worked and nobody was left to be asked about them."
