"Two useful things and one problem. The useful things first: the Emblem cup is already described in April as being for the most artistic arrangement — the terms the show would print in August alongside the older general-display wording, and the terms the judges used — and it had been Mrs. C. S. Hudson's for two years, which fits the 1917 award and the two blank summers after it.",
"The problem is Smith. This page gives the Commercial club cup to Mrs. E. A. Smith. The same paper in August gives it to Mrs. C. A. Smith. Both were read on each page's native-resolution scan, and both are unambiguous. The archive records the disagreement and does not choose; whoever she was, she held a trophy in Bend in 1920 under two sets of initials.",
"A smaller note. The lawn prize's contact is Mrs. A. Whisnant. A. Whisnant had been toastmaster at the Emblem Club's banquet for the state bankers in June 1918. The surname is uncommon enough in this file to be worth marking, and a household connection is the obvious reading — but the page does not make one."
