    "summary": "A February 1917 advertisement for \"Bend Emblem Butter\" prints the emblem itself, twelve days after the Bend Park Company printed the same mark in a box beside its own address.",
    "findings": [
      "A display advertisement for \"Bend Emblem Butter\", placed by L. B. Lafollette, ran on February 20 and 21, 1917.",
      "It prints the emblem twice: a heavy circular rule filled by BEND in condensed, interlocking capitals spanning the disc.",
      "Measured on the native scan, the printed device is 109 by 113 pixels at about 304 dpi — close to circular, and roughly three eighths of an inch across on the page.",
      "This is a dated drawing of the letter device inside the years the project had recorded as holding none — 1917 to 2000.",
      "Its construction — compressed letters filling a ring — matches the 2001 Chamber roundel recorded here as \"tall narrow letters filling a ring\".",
      "The emblem is used as a commercial brand five years after the club adopted it and five years before the Commercial Club did.",
      "The February 21 repeat prints from the same block: the device measures 110×109 pixels on that page's native scan against 109×113 on February 20, so the advertiser held a standing cut of the emblem."
    ],
    "limitations": [
      "The device is small on the page and the reproduction is limited by it. A native-resolution region is filed here at about 304 dpi, which is 2.1 times the detail of the 144 dpi page render, and the construction is legible in it; individual stroke weights and terminals are not. No proportional measurement of the letterforms should be taken from either reproduction.",
      "The advertisement does not say the device is the Emblem Club's, or name a designer, or claim any right in it. The identification of a \"Bend emblem\" with the club's device is stated in the paper four years later, not here.",
      "Resemblance of construction is not a documented chain. Nothing connects this block to the 2001 file except their shared form, and eighty-four undocumented years lie between them.",
      "L. B. Lafollette's relationship to the Emblem Club, if any, is unknown.",
      "The advertisement spells the advertiser two ways: “L. B. Lafallette” in the italic line and “L. B. LAFOLLETTE” in the signature. Both are on the page and neither is corrected here.",
      "The two impressions are compared by their measured pixel extents on two separate scans, which agree to within a few pixels. That is consistent with one block and inconsistent with a resetting at a different size; it is not a registration of the two images against each other."

It ran on February 20 and again on February 21, 1917.",
      "It is a small block: about three eighths of an inch across on the page, printed at the size of a trademark rather than a masthead. Everything that can be said about its drawing has to be said from that.",
      "It ran again the next day, and the block is the same one. Measured on each paper's own native scan, the device is 109 by 113 pixels on February 20 and 110 by 109 on February 21 — the same electrotype, inked a little more heavily the second day, not a fresh setting. Whoever placed the advertisement owned the cut.",
      "This archive has described 1917 to 2000 as its largest gap — the years without a single dated drawing of the letter device, with the earliest afterwards a Chamber of Commerce roundel captured in August 2001. This page falls inside that gap at its very start, and it is a drawing: not a description, not a reference, but the device itself, printed, dated and local.",
      "Set the two side by side. The 2001 file is recorded here as “tall narrow letters filling a ring”. The 1917 block is condensed capitals filling a circular rule. That is the same construction eighty-four years apart, and it is the first physical evidence the project has that the modern roundel's form has an early ancestor rather than a modern invention.",
      "It also puts the emblem on a product five years after the club adopted it and five years before the town did — as a brand name, not a civic badge. Four years later a Redmond creamery would be selling butter in Bend under “the circular Bend emblem”, and the paper would identify that emblem as the Emblem Club's."
