"The Emblem Club was founded in 1912 to make Bend known outside Bend, and its oath ran until the town reached a hundred thousand. Five years in, a visiting officer of a national order stands up in the club's own dining room and tells a hundred people that Bend is the best advertised town in the northwest. He is not talking about the club — he is describing its result, and he does not know he is doing it.",
"The prediction is the other half. Bend had about 2,000 people when the club was founded. Martin gives it 15,000 within two years. It would not reach that figure for another sixty. Booster arithmetic of this kind is the air the club breathed, and the 1913 oath is the same arithmetic written down and sworn to."
