"The mid-century Emblem Club cup was a prize with no club behind it, its category reinvented each August — a luncheon table arrangement in 1933, a miniature on a mirror in 1938, vegetables in 1942. This is what it looked like while the club still existed.",
"The committee published numbered rules, and noted they were the same as the previous year, which carries the arrangement back to 1915. Three of them are set apart below, because rule four only means what it means among its neighbours: they are about what one exhibitor may put in and how many prizes a single exhibit may take, and the Emblem cup sits inside that as the prize for the “general display”.",
"So the Emblem cup was the prize for the whole exhibit rather than a single bloom, and anyone wanting to enter for it had to notify the show secretary a week in advance so that space could be reserved. A settled arrangement, published, unchanged year to year.",
"The club had given the cup in 1912 to be kept by whoever won it three seasons running. Nobody ever did."
