It is the museum's reading of its own collection, not a period document, and it is the only source located for four emblem-bearing objects the museum holds.",

    "findings": [
      "The narration dates the emblem to “between 1911 and 1912”. It is museum-staff interpretation recorded in 2013 and no primary document behind it has been located.",
      "It reads the membership oath substantially as the 1913 book has it, independently of this project's transcription.",
      "At 2:43 the curator says the museum has no picture of William Cheney, which corroborates this project's own failure to find one.",
      "Four emblem-bearing objects appear in the film that no other located source names, each filed here as its own record.",
      "The disc used as the video's title graphic is the drawing the museum published on its website in February 2012 (dhs-2012-emblem), not a photographed artifact."
    ],
    "limitations": [
      "A video is not a document. Everything the narration says about dates is the museum's reading, and this archive cites it as that.",
      "The film dates none of the four objects it shows, and the museum has no public catalogue, so their dates are open.",
      "The frames filed here are 1280 by 720, which is the video, not the photographs. The museum holds the originals.",
      "The transcript quoted is the research deliverable's, made with faster-whisper from the video's audio; two mistranscriptions are recorded in the deliverable and neither is in a sentence quoted here."

    "body": [
      "The Deschutes Historical Museum put a short talk about the Emblem Club on YouTube on 20 February 2013, for the club's hundredth anniversary. A curator speaks to camera in a room hung with framed photographs, and the film cuts between her and the museum's own holdings.",
      "The narration makes two claims worth separating. The first is a date: the emblem “was created by the Bend Emblem Club in between 1911 and 1912”. No document this archive holds says that, and the earliest the emblem can be shown is 3 July 1912, the morning the Bend Park Company bought a page of the Bulletin to print it. The second is the oath, which the narration reads substantially as the 1913 book has it: members would wear the emblem “until the day that Bend reached a population of 100,000 people”.",
      "And one sentence is a finding of its own. “The Emblem Club is represented all over in our photographs,” the curator says at 2:43, “but the one thing we don't have is a picture of William Cheney the man who started it all.” The museum has looked. So has this project.",
      "What makes the film matter to this archive is not the talk but the pictures behind it. Four objects appear in it that no catalogue, article or web page names: a photograph of three skiers in emblem sweaters, a banquet hall with an emblem banner, two leaves of a printed item with an emblem in each bottom corner, and a baseball team whose jerseys carry it. Each has its own record here. The film dates none of them.",
      "The disc shown here is the video's own title graphic, not a photographed object, and it is the drawing the museum published on its website in February 2012."
