    "title": "An earlier effort to preserve the story",
    "intro": "Two working documents from BendEmblemClub.com, a blog draft of 2019 and a platform comparison of 2020, record an earlier effort to bring the emblem and its history online.",
    "body": [
      "The blog draft was written in a Google Doc between 23 May and 8 August 2019 and holds site notes, a page plan, three quotations from the 1913 book, a “Hello Bend” introduction and an article about the Bend Central District. The second is a one-page comparison of platforms for a virtual professional network, dated 23 June 2020. Both are filed in this project’s research notes.",
      "They are secondary at best. They are this project’s own earlier interpretation, useful for what they cite and for the record of how the idea evolved, and not evidence about the club.",
      "One paragraph of the 2019 draft carries most of what the earlier effort believed about the club, and this archive has since tested every claim in it.",
      "The club’s end holds. The draft cites nothing for 1924, and the Bulletin of 13 May 1924 reports on its front page that the stockholders had voted the night before to disband after a year of inactivity. A Bend’s Yesterdays column of 1939 reprints that same report, reached by a different route, which corroborates the recovered text. The draft was right and had no way to show it.",
      "The founding date moves the other way. The draft puts it in January 1913; the Bulletin prints notices of the Emblem Club in July 1912, so the club is a year older than the draft says. The retrospectives do not agree with each other either — the 1924 disbanding report says 1913, a 1943 obituary says 1911, and a 1969 recollection remembers a dinner in January 1913 — and the draft followed one of them.",
      "Who drew the emblem is the claim this archive cannot support at all. No contemporary source it holds names a designer. The nearest thing to an attribution is a 2014 interview crediting William Cheney, and the site prints that as the speaker’s attribution rather than as a fact.",
      "The population figure is the one claim still uncited, and this archive cannot supply it either. Its series is decennial census counts only, deliberately, because the Bureau does not publish intercensal figures for places. The nearest certified estimate filed here is Portland State’s 92,840 for 1 July 2020, and the federal count of 1 April 2020 was 99,178."

    "quote": "So, you might be wondering what the Bend Emblem Club is? Long before I coopted the name for my new website, it was a historical movement to support growth in Bend Oregon! In January of 1913 prominent members of our community founded the Bend Emblem Club, they invented the now famous Bend logo and pledged to display it until Bend reached a population of 100k people. Well here we are over 100 years later, every member of the club is long passed, and our city still only has approximately 95k residents. The club disbanded in 1924, but today I am picking the torch back up in the spirit of the original movement!"
