"The Bulletin gives most of a column to the Bend Commercial Club’s new stationery, introduces it in two sentences, and then reprints the whole promotional write-up that was printed on it — beginning “Bend is situated in the very heart of the Deschutes Valley” and running on through the timber, the irrigation segregation and the railroads still being built.",
"What the two sentences do not mention is a mark of any kind. That is an argument from silence and no more: the paper was reproducing words, not illustrations, and a device on a letterhead is exactly the thing a column of type would not carry. But it is the only detailed account we have of the stationery the 1908 competition was meant to decorate, and it names what was on the back — a map, not a medallion.",
"The right edge of this column is faded in the filed scan. Two words of the passage, “on Bend” and “appears”, are read against their ghosted letterforms rather than off clean ink; everything else in it is crisp."
